Highlights from Past Road Trips

January 2011: Midwest Road Trip

What: In January 2011, Katie Blanchard & Katelyn Hale traveled through the Midwest, visiting colleges in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Missouri to lead workshops, trainings, and presentations for student organizations. Blog.

Where:

  • Knox College (Galesburg, IL)
  • Kalamazoo College (Kalamazoo, MI)
  • University of Toledo (Toledo, OH)
  • Indiana University (Bloomington, IN)
  • University of Missouri (Columbia, MO)
  • Beloit College (Beloit, WI)
  • Carleton College (Northfield, MN)
  • St. Olaf College (Northfield, MN)

Highlights:

Following a visit from Katie and Katelyn, Knox College students created the Knox Food Coalition and organized a Sustainable Food Forum with the help of two environmental studies professors, their dining service director, and a local CSA grower.

At Beloit College, Katie and Katelyn got to see the Beloit Student Dining Cooperative, the student-run co-op that’s now up and running and providing real food and great community to the college’s students.

In Northfield, MN, Katie and Katelyn visited Carleton College and St. Olaf’s College, and saw that a comparison between the two school’s Real Food Calculator reports could shed a lot of light on the local food system, because both have the same provider (Bon Appetit) and they are located in the same town. Carleton is already working with the Calculator and St. Olaf’s is getting on board soon!
